いつも未来のことが気になって、私たちには期待する、という悪い癖ができる。いつも何かが近づくのだ。毎日々々「またね」と繰り返しながら。岸壁から見ていると、小さい、くっきりとした期待という名の輝く船団が近づいてくる。あんなにゆっくり、うんと時間をかけて。急ごうなんてしやしない。でも私たちは、結局、手に失望を束のように握りしめたままだ。なぜなら、巨大船団は邪魔もされないのに、真鍮細工もあざやかに、ロープもしっかり結ばれ、旗をなびかせ、船首は金の乳房を光らせ、こちらに身を乗り出しているというのに、決して停泊しないから。あ、来たと思うそばから、もう過去のものになっている。最後まで。私たちは信じ続ける。きっと船はそれぞれ停まって、私たちに幸という積み荷をおろしてくれると、こんなにずっと熱心に待っていたのだから、きっと報われるはずと。だけれど私たちは間違ってる。私たちにやってくる船はただひとつ。黒い、見慣れぬ帆をなびかせ、ひきつれているのは、鳥もいない巨大な静寂。船のすぎたあと、水は満ちも、波たちも、しない。
